One of the most fertile aspects of the weekly ImprovFriday event (a regular web meeting/sharing of musicians from all over the world) is that there are very few expectations or rules. Musicians are free to create tracks of whatever music or sound interests them; the tracks can be simply listened to for pleasure, or can be used as material for new and different explorations by other IF members. This particular series was created almost without intention; from initial tracks by myself and Roger Sundström, Jérôme Poirier added his own sounds while drastically refining and condensing the material. Struck by the sound, I decided to recombine Jérôme's new track with bits of music from Norbert Oldani and again Roger Sundström. Jérôme then reworked this track while adding something from Kavin Allenson; I took it back again to add work by Bruce Hamilton and Steve Moshier; Jérôme countered yet again by reworking all of this into another succinct and refined version, and I finished the game by laying this all on a bed of music by Jeff Fairbanks. Through it all, there remained always a certain clarity and unity; each new addition created a new 'flavor', but the dish was still the same dish, and fit on the same plate. Game over, where there was no game before, the point was to always tie, and everyone wins...

Match nul. Et tout le monde gagne...

In January 2010 I discovered ImprovFriday. It's a new music network centered around the event of the same name where musicians can post a piece with strong improvisational elements. And I quickly learnt about what the community called "mash-ups". Here is a collection of the mash-ups I worked on during the 2010 ImprovFriday events. Each piece has been created within the 48-hours alloted per session featuring materials of thirty-four participants.

News Week Vision is a fresh compilation of new versions of improvised songs recorded by Jude Cowan Montague in response of Reuters news stories during 2011 by Brian O'Shaughnessy at Bark Studios which were originally released as 'World News Vision March 2011' and 'World News vision April 2011'on Three Legs Duck. Each invited artist-composer received separated WAVs of the keyboard, voice and drum machine and created an audio response to the track at their own discretion. The results are incredibly varied and show diverse modes of expression. Some artists have chosen to leave the original track more intact as they work whereas others have approached the task by chopping up the sound source until it is almost unrecognizable. This collaborative approach was first realized in the album 'Lamb & Tyger - The Commune' released in 2011 on Rash Records.
