This means that the music is free to download, and that you are welcome (indeed encouraged) to share it, remix, and use it how you wish, as long as full credit is given to the creators. There are a few exceptions, where the artist has specified a different licence (please check!), and the occasional "physical only" release.
Linear Obsessional is put together by Richard Sanderson, an improvising musician based in South London.

Musicians, sound makers and artists isolated and creating.
Solo sound works all recorded at home.
Volume 2 will bring the artists together.
I started coming up with the idea for the >>>>>>Self Isolating Compilation<<<<<< just before the full lockdowns started - we were all being told it would be a good idea to stay at home, but the Governmental edicts hadn't started. By the time the last tracks came in we are all forced to stay in, and find new ways of working.
For musicians this enforced isolation seems especially cruel, as music is, possibly above all, a social activity that explores not just the interaction between musicians, but also between musicians and an audience.
Even if I avoid the cliche of the falling tree in an empty forest, the idea of making music in a void seems strange.
These 85 (Eighty Five!) tracks are an attempted answer to the conundrum, all recorded in isolation at home, and almost all solo (the exceptions being three improvising musicians who share a house, and a father and son duo) throughout the world. There are tracks from UK, USA, France, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Ireland and the Canary Islands. The result is a kaleidoscope of variety - electronics, acoustic improvisations, the odd song and a poem.
This may feel like 85 individuals shouting into the maelstrom, or whistling in the dark, but it's really the sounds of people coming to terms with the isolation and being creative, and it is remarkably cohesive
But there is a secondary purpose. For Volume Two I will be asking musicians and others to mix three or four selected tracks together in remixes and mash-ups, so the musicians play together again in new combinations.
The tracks are all issued under a creative commons licence, so you are also welcome to combine and weave the tracks together in any way you wish - but please let us know about them.
This compilation is free to download, but you can choose to pay if you wish, and any money generated will be used to help move Linear Obsessional back into being a functional record label again.
Enjoy listening

Self Isolating Congregation
As the effects of the Covid 19 epidemic started to spread, leading eventually to an unprecedented global lockdown, Linear Obsessional asked musicians to send us up to three and a half minutes of them playing solo in isolation. When an extraordinary 85 tracks came in (and was released as >>>>>>Self Isolating Compilation<<<<<<, it was clear that the result was not only a testament to isolated creativity, but also an extraordinary resource. 85 pieces of music, building bricks, begging to be reassembled into new works. Having assembled a cast of remixers I set about allocating 4 tracks each, using a random number generator to ensure no bias in the selections. Only one person (Peter Nagle) ended up getting themselves.
This album consists of twenty quartets and one trio.
The remixers have worked magic, pulling together disparate strands in startlingly original ways. All the original artists are represented and audible here, although sometimes you might have to listen hard for ghostly fragments!
Thanks to everybody who took part in this experiment. There will be no volume 3!
As with the previous collection >>>>>Self Isolating Congregation<<<<< is free to download, but if you decide to pay, any money received will be used to help keep Linear Obsessional active as a record label.
Released May 1 May 2020

"Button Box" is a collection of 46 mixes constructed from elements taken from the Linear Obsessional album "Air Buttons" by Richard Sanderson (LOR046)
"After releasing my album of melodeon and electronics improvisations, I decided to ask my friends whether they would be interested in reworking any of the material- 'Please take any music at all from the new release ("Air Buttons" by me) and do what you want with it - mangle it, remix it, add things to it, sing over it, play a duo with it, slow it down, turn it into a tune, cut it up, whatever. BUT please make your contribution EXACTLY TWO MINUTES LONG'. I was astonished by the reaction- soon sound files were flying at me from all over the world, including from friends of friends of friends, as well as from people who I've known since school days- collaborators from my post-punk days, free improvisers, morris dancers, other Linear Obsessional artists, even my next-door neighbour! The results are amazingly varied in style - and all are fascinating, and of course, none of them outstay their welcome. So- enormous thanks to all my friends in the UK, France, Spain,Ireland, Sweden, USA and Malaysia, you have made me very proud"

"Two Minutes Left"
A compilation of tracks all exactly two minutes long, and all using microphones somewhere in the process....
Please see the PDF booklet which comes with the download for full details and further information on all the tracks.
These 87 tracks were all sent to me in response to a call for works issued on the Linear Obsessional blog.
My two rules were that the works had to be exactly two minutes long, and that at some point in the recording process a microphone should have been used - in other words, before the sounds presented here reach your ears they have, in some way, travelled through air.
The reasons for these rules were rather prosaic - two minutes to keep the collection short (that was before I realised it was going to have 87 tracks!) and it's a discipline I enjoy- see the earlier compilation of remixes "Button Box". The insistence on using a microphone was to discourage completely electronic works, and to bring in some domestic elements- to give the recordings a sense of place.
The results, as you can hear are as diverse as it's possible to imagine- from full, immaculately produced studio works to hissy smartphone recordings- and throughout there are things to remind you that you're listening to real people in real places - birdsong, pets, breathing, conversation, and the location recordings run from the electrobabble of a Shanghai cab ride to the near silence of night on the Argentinian Pampas, to the sounds of the pub or a football match. In between are some gloriously recorded musical vignettes by some of the most extraordinary musicians around.
I really am delighted with this compilation, it seems to me to be ultimately a celebration of being human, and a celebration of friendship and collaboration. There are some people on here I've known since pre-school days, others I've only got to know via social media, some are people I've played music with for decades, others are my neighbours.
There's a lot to listen to - choose your own way of doing it - all in one go, or dipping in, from one end to the other, or on shuffle play, but if you like something, I suggest you do an internet search, look up the artists and see what else they have to offer. You won't be disappointed.
